Extraction is usually the last option considered, recommended only after a dentist has ruled out a crown, root canal, or other restorative fix. Simple extractions handle teeth fully visible above the gumline, while surgical extractions are needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline or hasn't fully erupted.
Local anesthesia numbs the area completely before any extraction begins, with sedation options available for anxious patients or more involved surgical cases. Following the socket-care instructions closely for the first few days is what prevents the most common post-extraction complication.
Delaying a decision on replacement isn't necessarily a problem, though your provider will flag if drift risk makes it worth doing sooner. If an implant is planned down the line, a bone graft placed at the time of extraction can preserve the socket's shape for that later procedure.
No separate referral needed for more complex surgical extractions in most cases.
Comfort options beyond local anesthesia are offered for patients who need them.
A tooth causing acute pain or infection can often be removed the same day it's diagnosed.
You leave with specific instructions on diet, rinsing, and activity to protect the healing socket.
Our network specialists cover the full range of this procedure, from the routine case to the complicated one.
The most common extraction type, typically quick with straightforward recovery.

Removes teeth that have lost too much bone support from periodontal disease to remain functional.

Local anesthesia numbs the area fully before extraction, so the procedure itself shouldn't hurt.
Simple extractions typically heal within a week; surgical extractions may take a bit longer.
Dry socket happens when the healing blood clot dislodges too early — avoiding straws and smoking helps prevent it.
Not always, but leaving a gap too long can let neighboring teeth shift — your provider will discuss options.
Urgent cases involving pain or infection are often accommodated same-day rather than scheduled out.
Cost depends on whether it's a simple or surgical extraction, confirmed for you before the visit.
